Poem: Bday

A Birthday Poem

Birthdays come and go each year,

Today is yours, so don’t you fear.

Conversations fill the air,

We have joined you since we care.

Funny jokes and laughs out loud,

We will always be your crowd.

Many friends you haven’t seen,

How long has it really been?

We shall dance all through the night,

Until our spirits are truly light.

Celebrate our dearest friend,

A birthday poem, we wish to send.

Poem

Remember a Year

A little reminder to show that I care,

A few thoughts in my mind, openly share.

Where should I begin, before raindrops appear?

Has it already been another beautiful year?

Who would have guessed; no changes at all

Expressions the same, If I do recall.

In sync rhythm, with rosy red cheek.

Please do not worry, you are not asleep,

Internal changes and growth, surely not cheap.

A birthday; a chance to remember a year,

Where is the line of moving frontier?

Bday Poem for best Friend

U are the best friend that I have ever found,

I promise that I will never give you any wound.

I do a lot of emotional atyachar on you,

I am sure it will disappear and it will become very few.

U are the most practical person that I have ever seen,

And also the great support you have been.

Your presence around makes me very confident,

Every moment with you around is like an achievement.

The essence of yours is your ever smiling face,

For rest of them they are a great disgrace.

The understanding nature of yours is awesome,

To be with you is a great fun.

You don’t like my always ever sad mood,

I also tend to be sometime very rude.

But kiii, a promise from my side,

I would always have a smiling face wide.

I will never make you feel hurt,

If yes, then tear away my shirt.

He my best friend pandu,

Never ever get angry on this gandu.

Bday Poem for best Friend

Happy birthday my best friend,

Amazing times, we always spend.

Laughter and jokes are common place,

Since we built that solid base.

Special friend that I hold dear,

Always wish to have you near.

We get along, like bread with honey,

A friendship worth, much more than money.

If you stumble, count me there,

Gratitude; no need to declare.

Your thoughts are clear, in my mind,

Understanding we always find.

Happy birthday my best friend,

I’m excited to attend.

This birthday poem, is just for you,

A great big smile is overdue.

Bday Poem for best Friend

Happy birthday.

Happy birthday my best friend ******,

All your wishes will come for free.

You are the most the most important person in my life,

More important than my beloved wife.

I pray that all your wishes will come true,

You would be the most sought after in the crew.

you would climb the ladder of success to Everest,

everyone will say you are the best.

Your life will always be smooth sailing,

you will get all success without failing.

Your smile and you will always be inseparable,

All paneer dishes would be always be there at ur dinning table.

I wish happiness to everyone associated with you,

I hope in ur life I am the chosen few.

You will get the best person in your life,

And he would be really lucky to take u as his wife.

Wish you again, happy birthday my dear,

Live life to fullest without fear.

A. Name of Book: Why We Buy

B. Author: Paco Underhill

C. Background of Author: (Education, work experience, other books that he has written):

Paco Underhill is an environmental psychologist, the author of the books Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping and Call of the Mall: The Geography of Shopping, and the founder of a market research and consulting company called Envirosell. D. Summary of Each chapter (100 words each): Mention each chapter – summarize in 100 words.

Chapter 1 - Background

Stores would not survive without impulse shopping.

We are over retailed.

New stores are trying to steal existing market share because there is no new market.

Brand names are being eroded. ("Selling the Invisible" says the opposite.)

Chapter 2 - The Mechanics

In some stores, buyers spend three to four times longer than non-buyers. Get them to shop longer - talking to employees helps.

As shoppers ourselves, you would think we could organize our own stores properly.

We can determine where shoppers will walk in a store.

Amenability and profitability are inextricably linked.

Chapter 3 - The Approach and Entryway

While walking through parking lots people are not looking at the store windows.

Chapter 4

Keep the customers' hands free to touch and browse.

One store gives you a bag to gather stuff in and then tries to sell you the bag at the check out.

Chapter 5 - Signs

People don't see signs. They are focused on other things, or signs are badly laid out and placed in the wrong places.

Put signs where people are waiting. Give them something to look at.

In 1½ seconds, we can only read 3 or 4 words.

Chapter 6

Shoppers move like people - they want to see stuff face on, not sideways. This applies to window displays & store displays.

American shoppers move to the right the same way they drive.

Chapter 7 - Dynamics

Provide seating for support people: husbands shopping with wives, etc.

More than 50% of fast food is served in Drive-Thru Windows. Ten percent of those people park in the parking lot to eat (primarily women).

Chapter 8 - Shop like a man

Men are easier to up sell than women.

Men are more likely to ignore price tags.

Sell to the woman - close to the man.

Open a women's store next to a store that will keep the men happy, e.g., computers etc.

Women's stores are not organized for men to buy.

Men's Health magazine sells more than 1.5 million copies per month.

Chapter 9 - What women want

Hardware stores now make it much easier for women to shop.

Very few coupons are used anymore - Safeway card is the new style.

Stores selling cosmetics.

Stuff for older people on the lowest shelf. We can't get down there with any comfort.

Will I get jostled if I stand here?

Fast food restaurants: men tend to sit at front, women in rear.

Women focus on results, not processes when computer shopping.

Gas station for women: the cleanest washrooms anywhere.

Chapter 10 - We're getting older

We can't read labels and signs. They must make it easier for us. Eyes start to falter at age 40. Also, blues and greens blend so are not good for contrast. At 50, we get 1/4 less light in our retinas than a 20-year-old does.

The lighting is too dull.

Put a magnifying glass on a chain near medicine bottles.

ATM's should talk to us.

How can you make your store more senior citizen friendly?

Over 60's wheel chair accessible!

Mattresses will become quasi medical and less furniture-focused.

Chapter 11 - Kids

Kids go shopping with parents. If you cater to families, is your store stroller accessible?

Even McDonalds make it difficult for kids to order. Kids can't see menus, can't see over counter.

How smart booksellers stack their shelves. Very good section about bookstores.

Toys: Adults select and buy but the kids are the decision makers. Stores need kid appeal.

Wells Fargo: 15% of traffic was under 7 years of age.

Help keep the kids amused.

Chapter 12 - The Sensual shopper

We buy more than ever based on trial & touch.

Close to 90% of new products fail mainly because people don't try them.

In 1960. 35% of a Sears store was storage, now it is 15%.

23% of Asian-American shoppers tore open packages to check the product.

Dressing rooms: Very good section in the book. It's got great potential. They are underutilized.

Testing products: Three types of pencil sharpener: hand, battery, electric. Can I test them? No way. Not set up and no pencils to sharpen.

Gel deodorants for men from Gillette: How can we distinguish one from another. They are all sealed, we can't smell them or touch anything. We have to be able to explore the product.

Chapter 13 - The Big Three

Design, Merchandising, Operations. Often these don't work well together.

Chapter 14 - Time

Bad time is when the customer is made to wait.

Chapter 15 - Cash/Wrap

Many things go wrong here. Reduce theft and other good ideas: combining the two is frustrating for the customer.

Chapter 16 - Magic Acts

Layout of stores

Add-ons - up selling

Linking products: in book store, put the kid's books & health books near the women's books.

Chapter 17 - Cyberspace: advantages and disadvantages

Difficult to find your way around.

You can't touch the products.

No social interaction, no immediate gratification.

Catalogues account for less than 10% of shopping.

Chapter 18 - Self exam

Book gives a great example for bookstore.

Examine your business: start ½ block away; look outside the store and inside the store.

Put signs where people linger.

Americans don't list banks among their top five sources of information and advice on finance. In the US which bank employee has the most interaction with customer? The security guard, and he doesn't work for the bank.

Chapter 19 - Final thoughts

In the old days, the right price/location/product was success. Now that is what's necessary to survive.

Where is the art, the presentation, the romance, the seduction in shopping?

What we like: touch; mirrors; discovery; talking; recognition; bargains

What we hate: too many mirrors; lines; asking dumb questions; goods out of stock; obscure price tags; intimidating service

Demands of anatomy must be obeyed.

Gender and ages must be accommodated.

E. 3 key learnings from the book:

1. Purchasing behaviors can be studied: Underhill and his team opened the eyes of CEO and retail managers everywhere with their unique approach of meticulously observing people as they shopped. They brought techniques from anthropology and merged them with economics to create a new science.

2. Retailers still have much to learn about why people buy: Most CEOs that Underhill spoke with knew a whole lot about how store revenues but very little about what actually made customer purchase. For example, one CEO he spoke with believed that about 99% of people who visited their stores made purchase. When Underhill revealed that the correct statistic was only 48%, the CEO was needless to say enthralled with the possibilities.

3. Sellers can benefit from understanding buyer behavior: Buyers have a certain way of walking through a store. A specific way of using their hands, looking at signs, taking breaks while shopping. Sellers who understand these behaviors can gain a huge competitive advantage.

F. How would you apply this in your personal life?

Underhill's book certainly opened my eyes to what retailers know and do not know about what makes people buy. My only problem with his book is the writing format. Underhill's writing is actually pretty good, but it lacks periodic summaries of main points to really drive home the reader's understanding.

By reading "Why We Buy," you will get an informative, if sometimes wandering, read through the psychology of buying.

Suppose if I go for a shopping, this book enables me the psychology behind the objects that I shop for. It is obvious that sellers use tactics to grab attention of buyer and make it an impulse purchase, there may be a time that the fascination towards a product is not practically a usable product and this enables me to understand the gag and shop wisely.

Also the different behavior displayed by different gender while shopping can help effectively managing shopping phenomenon on personal level.

G. How could you apply these learnings in your professional life?

1. Purchasing behaviors can be studied: Underhill and his team opened the eyes of CEO and retail managers everywhere with their unique approach of meticulously observing people as they shopped. They brought techniques from anthropology and merged them with economics to create a new science.

3. Sellers can benefit from understanding buyer behavior: Buyers have a certain way of walking through a store. A specific way of using their hands, looking at signs, taking breaks while shopping. Sellers who understand these behaviors can gain a huge competitive advantage.

4. You can always sell more: Your best customers are your current customers. Find ways to upsell. Entice them to the back of the store. Keep them in the store longer.

5. Women and men shop differently: For example, men tend to go into a store, look at a large shelf of items, pick one, and quickly leave. Meanwhile, women are actually more information-intensive, reading the label for each possibility before making a purchase.

6. People use all five senses to decide on a purchase: The more of the five senses to which a seller can appeal, the better. People want verification with their whole body before buying a product.

7. Shopping on the Internet is different: Okay, this one is a "well, duhhh, Mr. Underhill" today, but remember this book was written in the late 1990s. Underhill does list some truisms about the advantages of shopping on the Internet which are helpful reminders.

Book Review: The Secret by Rhonda Bryne

A. Name of Book: The Secret

B. Author: Rhonda Byrne

C. Background of Author: (Education, work experience, other books that he has written):

Rhonda Byrne (born March 12, 1951) is an Australian television writer and producer, best known for her New Thought works, The Secret—a book and a film by the same name. By the Spring of 2007 the book had sold almost 4 million copies, and the DVD had sold more than 2 million copies. She has also been a producer for Sensing Murder. According to an article published by Australia's Herald Sun, Byrne has also worked on the Australian TV series World's Greatest Commercials and Marry Me. In 2007, Byrne was listed among Time Magazine's list of 100 people who shape the world.

D. Summary of Each chapter (100 words each): Mention each chapter – summarize in 100 words.

1. The Secret Revealed:

The great secret of life is law of attraction.

The law of attraction says like attracts like, so when you think a thought, you are also attracting like thoughts to you.

Thoughts are magnetic and thoughts have a frequency. As you think thoughts, they magnetically attract all like things that are on the same frequency. Everything sent out returns to the source i.e. you.

You are like a human transmission tower, transmitting a frequency with your thoughts. If you want to change anything in your life, change the frequency by changing the thoughts.

2. The Secret made simple:

The law of attraction is a law of nature. It is as important as the law of gravity.

Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.

To know what you are thinking, ask yourself how you are feeling. Emotions are valuable tools that instantly tell us what we are thinking.

It is impossible to feel bad and at the same time have good thoughts.

3. How to use the secret:

Like the Aladdin genie, law of attraction grants our every command.

The creative process helps you create what you want in three simple steps: ask, believe and receive.

Asking the universe for what you want is your opportunity to get clear about what you want. As you get clear in your mind you have got what you have asked. Believing involves acting, speaking and thinking as though you have already received what you have asked for. When you emit the frequency of having received it, the law of attraction moves people, events and circumstances for you.

4. Powerful process:

Expectation is a powerful attractive force. Expect the things you want and don’t expect the things you don’t want.

Gratitude is a powerful process for shifting your energy and bringing more of what you want into your life. Be grateful for what you already have and you will attract more good things.

Giving thanks to what you want in advance turbo changes your desires and sends more powerful signal out into the universe.

5. The secret to money:

To attract money, focus is on your wealth. It is impossible to bring more money into your life when you focus on lack of it.

It is helpful to use your imagination and make believe you already have the money you want. Play games of having wealth and you will feel better about it, more will flow in your life.

Feeling happy now is the fastest way to bring money back into your life.

6. The secret to relationships:

When you want to attract a relationship, make sure your thoughts, words, actions and surroundings don’t contradict your desires.

Your job is you. Unless you fill yourself up first, you have nothing to give anybody.

Treat yourself with love and respect, and you will attract people who show you love and respect.

7. The secret to your health:

The placebo effect is an example of the law of attraction in action. When a patient truly believes the tablet is a cure, he receives what he believes the tablet is a cure, he receives what he believes and is cured.

“Focusing on perfect health” is something we can all do within ourselves, despite what may be happening on the outside.

Laughter attracts joy, releases negativity, and leads to miraculous cure.

8. The secret to the world:

What you resist, you attract, because you are powerfully focused on it with the emotion. To change anything, go within and emit a new signal with thoughts and feelings.

You cannot help the world by focusing on the negative things. As you focus on the worlds negative events, you not only add to them but you also bring more negative things into your life.

9. The secret to you:

Everything is energy. You are a energy magnet, so you electrically energize everything to you and electrically energize yourself to everything you want.

You are a spiritual being. You are energy and energy cannot be created or destroyed. It just changes its form. Therefore the pure essence of you has always been and always will be.

E. 3 key learnings from the book:

The Secret reminds us that there is a powerful connection between our thoughts and our actions.

The essence of The Secret is "the law of attraction."

You are God in a physical body. You are Spirit in the flesh. You are Eternal Life expressing itself as You. You are a cosmic being. You are all power. You are all wisdom. You are all intelligence. You are perfection. You are magnificence. You are the creator, and you are creating the creation of You on this planet.

F. How would you apply this in your personal life?

The essence of The Secret is "the law of attraction." According to Byrne and the twenty-nine co-contributors whom she quotes extensively, everything in the Universe (which is always capitalized and usually synonymous for "God") vibrates on a particular frequency. When you think in harmony with the frequency of something, you attract it to you. If you think about wealth, you will receive wealth. If you think instead about your debt, you will receive more debt. You attract what you think about; your thoughts determine your destiny.

Byrne restates the law of attraction in various ways: "Nothing [good or bad] can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts" (p. 28). "Your thoughts are the primary cause of everything". "Your current reality or your current life is a result of the thoughts you have been thinking". According to the product description on the DVD, "This is The Secret to everything—the secret to unlimited joy, health, money, relationships, love, youth: everything you have ever wanted.

Byrne promises with ironclad certainty: "There isn't a single thing that you cannot do with this knowledge. The Secret can give you whatever you want". By it "you will come to know how you can have, be, or do anything you want".

In the final analysis, The Secret is nothing more than Name It-Claim It, Positive-Confession, Prosperity Theology (without God and the Bible), built on a foundation of New Age self-deification. In other words, the book is just another version of what some TV preachers have taught for decades.

G. How could you apply these learnings in your professional life?

The law of attraction is a law of nature. It is as important as the law of gravity.

Nothing can come into your experience unless you summon it through persistent thoughts.

To know what you are thinking, ask yourself how you are feeling. Emotions are valuable tools that instantly tell us what we are thinking.

It is impossible to feel bad and at the same time have good thoughts.

Book Review: Star bucks Experience by Joseph Michelli

A. Name of Book: The Starbucks Experience

B. Author: Joseph Michelli

C. Background of Author: (Education, work experience, other books that he has written):

Dr. Joseph Michelli is an organization psychologist who has dedicated his career to studying successful businesses, both large and small. Prior to The Starbucks Experience, Dr. Michelli co-authored When Fish Fly: Lessons for Creating a Vital and Energized Workplace with John Yokoyama the owner of the world famous Pike Place Fish in Seattle.

Dr. Michelli transfers his knowledge of exceptional business practices through keynote addresses and workshops. These presentations provide ways to develop playful and productive workplaces that maximize productivity while fueling growth and employee morale.

In addition to his dynamic and entertaining international keynote presentations, Dr. Michelli and his staff provide:

o CEO consultation

o Corporate Coaching

o Leadership team Development Services

o Group facilitation and team-building strategies

D. Summary of Each chapter (100 words each): Mention each chapter – summarize in 100 words.

The Big Idea

The genius of Starbucks’ success lies in its ability to create personalized customer experiences,

secure customer loyalty, stimulate business growth, generate profits, and energize employees –

all at the same time. This has lead to unprecedented and astounding success; since 1992, Starbucks stock has risen by an astounding 5,000 percent.

In this celebrated book, Starbucks’ “secret recipe” has been condensed into five key principles.

PRINCIPLE 1: MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Senior management must find ways to get its partners to fully engage their passions and talents

while ensuring that individual partners’ differences are blended into a good uniform customer

experience.

It can be tough to find a balance between these two leadership responsibilities, but Starbucks has managed to do so through its principle of Make It Your Own. It has created a structure known as the “Five Ways of Being”, which is encapsulated in a pamphlet known as the Green Apron Book

Be welcoming

Defined as “offering everyone a sense of belonging”. Partners should do all they

can to create a place where people feel that they are a priority and where their day

can be brightened, at least for a moment.

Be genuine

At Starbucks, being genuine means to “connect, discover, and respond”. Connect. Customers have repeatedly shared experiences of Starbucks partners making a connection well beyond some formulaic greeting. Discover.Business success requires the discovery of each person’s needs and

individual situation.

Respond. Starbucks employees not only listen to their customers, but also take action immediately based on what they hear and learn from these experiences for future customer interactions.

Be considerate

Starbucks partners look beyond their needs and consider the needs of others – customers, potential customers, critics, co-workers, other shareholders, and even the environment – in sum, the entire universe of people and things Starbucks affects.

Be knowledgeable

Partners are encouraged to enhance their expertise in coffee and customer service. Value is always added to partners’ efforts when they gain work-related knowledge. In addition, as they become more informed, their value to the business, self-confidence, and the impact they have on others all increase

Be involved

This means nothing less than active participation in the store, in the company, and in the community – a “yes, I will” attitude where breakthrough products and service are created. There must be a move away from a “bare minimum is OK” mentality

PRINCIPLE 2: EVERYTHING MATTERS

All business is detail. When details are overlooked or missed, even the most patient customers can be frustrated and costly errors can occur. Leaders have to understand that they must take

care of both the “below-deck” (unseen aspects) and the “above-deck” (customer-facing components of the customer experience.

A small detail can sometimes make the difference between success and failure. Important details live in both that which is seen and that which is unseen by the customer

PRINCIPLE 3: SURPRISE AND DELIGHT

As early back as 1912, the Rueckheim brothers, who are behind the successful candy brand

Cracker Jack, already knew that adding a surprise to each package would dramatically increase

the appeal of their product.

In that vein, delight is the caramelized popcorn – the basic product customers get – while surprise

is the prize they get! Customers want the predictable and the consistent, while hoping for an

occasional positive twist or added value thrown in. Customer delight comes from surprise as well as predictability.

PRINCIPLE 4: EMBRACE RESISTANCE

To work with resistance effectively, you must distinguish between those people who really do

want their concerns resolved and those who simply want to complain. For some concerns,

listening is all that is required; for other types of resistance, direct action is required. Management

should know when listening is simply not enough.

PRINCIPLE 5: LEAVE YOUR MARK

We all end up leaving some mark on the world. What varies – and what is most important – is whether that mark is positive or negative. Do we give back more than we take, or do we take more than we give?

Successful leaders realize that a key component of their success is leaving a powerful and

positive mark in the communities in which their businesses operate. People want to do business

with, work for, invest in, and patronize socially conscious companies

E. 3 key learnings from the book:

• In knowledge and a service economy, we add value to business by enhancing customers experience.

• Embracing resistance involves a complex set of skills that enable businesses and individuals to create business and relationship opportunities when they are confronted with criticism, skepticism, irritation or wariness.

• Employee morale is 3 times higher in companies where community involvement is an integral part of the business model than in their less-involved counterparts.

F. How would you apply this in your personal life?

The five ways of being is very important concept that i can apply directly in my personal life, so as to build and maintain personal as well as professional relationships.

The five ways are:

1. Be Welcoming:

We need to be very welcoming to people and our environment in order to have a warm relationship with the individuals. We often aren’t welcoming to the guest coming to our house, and this often spoils relationships. So by been welcoming we can make people feel more comfortable with us.

2. Be genuine:

People interacting with us don’t always want to be our best friends but they want a feeling that our behavior towards them is genuine and not fake. The advantage of been genuine is it helps building mutual trust with the person we interact with.

3. Be Considerate:

We should always be considerate of needs of people and environment and respond to the situation in a considerate manner. By making consideration our own, we can look beyond our needs and consider the needs of other.

4. Be knowledgeable:

It’s very important for every one of us to love what we do and share this knowledge with others. We should be masters of our field of passion and should be able to educate the same to our surroundings.

5. Be involved:

Being involved means active participation of all the activities related to our friends, college programs or even our communities. This helps us in interacting with people from different background and also gives us an insight of the thinking of people with whom we interact.

G. How could you apply these learnings in your professional life?

Each one of the principles are given more attention, for example under the first principle of “Make it your own” the company further lists “be welcoming, be genuine, be considerate, be knowledgeable, and be involved” and stresses that these aren’t just for the retail level folks but for every area of the company. The various principles mentioned has common important point that customer is God. So if we make our company’s management according to the customers requirement be it administration, service or the HR policy, the process should be carried out in such a way that the end user or the customer should feel that the company really cares for the customer.

Although The Starbucks Experience is geared for businesses, its ideas can also be powerful for the individual desiring to make a difference in life. One of the central tenets of the Starbucks way is relationship building. Anyone can add coffee grounds to water and call it a drink. But the relationship that is built between barista and customer, over time, can transcend coffee and pastries. Likewise, humanity was not meant to live in a vacuum or on a deserted island. We crave relationships and will acquire them as best we know how. This is only natural, considering that God created people in order to be in an active relationship with them. Perhaps churches and other business organizations should take a good look at the value of relationships to Starbucks, because they’re obviously heading in the right direction.

HOW TO DEAL WITH FAILURE

Dean Shepherd, a professor of entrepreneurship at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, knows a few things about failure. Shepherd became interested in the subject as a doctoral student, when his father lost his longtime business. “He clammed up, denied that the business had gone and never spoke about his emotions,” Shepherd said during our recent conversation. His father’s reaction led to Shepherd’s eventual book From Lemons to Lemonade: Squeeze Every Last Drop of Success Out of Your Mistakes. Here is some of his advice.

The right and wrong ways to deal with failure

Needless to say, Shepherd’s father did not react to his failure in a healthy way. “If you don’t talk, you keep emotions down, but after awhile you have a severe reaction,” Shepherd says. However, talking about your failures too much can also be unhealthy, Shepherd warns, as constantly discussing emotions causes them to escalate.

The best way to deal with failure, then, is to find the middle ground between these two paths. “People usually feel comfortable talking or not talking, but we need to do both.” In other words, learn to talk about your reaction to failure, but don’t wallow in it. Shepherd says it’s this strategy of oscillating between talking and not talking that allows us to learn from our mistakes.

Three tips for facing failure

Here are a few of Shepherd’s additional suggestions for dealing with failure in a healthy way:

• 1. Address “secondary” causes of stress: When confronting a failure, it’s important to take care of the other things that need tending to as a result of that failure. Shepherd shares an example: “If you’re an entrepreneur and your business fails, you might have to sell the house, switch your children’s schools, look for a job. As you do these things, when you turn back and think about the failure, the enormity is less.”

• 2. Separate yourself from the failure: “Just because your business failed doesn’t mean you’re a failure,” Shepherd says. It’s important for people to actively work on separating their identity from their failure in order to move on.

• 3. Don’t let failure become normalized: “If we end up failing a lot, failure can become normalized, and when we fail, we don’t feel any emotional reaction,” says Shepherd. “That may sound good, but if you become desensitized to failure, you’ll become desensitized to commitment. This creates a bad cycle: you have less investment in your endeavor, so you fail, and you don’t learn from it.”

Finally, Shepherd advises people to keep the big picture in mind when dealing with failure. “Learn from past failures so you don’t make the same mistakes again. If we think of our projects as a series or a stream, we can be successful overall, even though we may fail at any particular one of them.”

MANAGING MANAGEMENT

this article is solely dedicated to management aspirants and all of those who have got into this fuss.
management is a great fuss but at the end of tit you are out as bright as the shirt shown in tide (washing powder) ka advertise. but on a serious note t his is one course in your life that i bet sure that you would never regret.
Lately, whenever someone who holds an MBA does something ethically questionable, it has become fashionable not to blame the person, but her degree.

What comes to our minds when we talk about IIMs, XLRI, Jamnalal Bajaj, FMS, etc...? A community of world's leading business thinkers, outstanding peers, accomplished executives, salaries like non-terminating number series, slick professionals with their think pads, great professors with their management mantras, brilliant students exuberating self-confidence. Life at a B-school offers much more than all this.

Two years in a B-school prepares managers of tomorrow. Even though students enter into a B-school with a specialization in their minds but B-school provides them with an opportunity to think upon his specialization again. In most of the B-schools, first year is common across all the specialisations, and after 1st year, students go in for their summer training in different corporates. During this 1st year, students do their complete SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threat) and then they choose upon their specialization. Even during summer placements, students choose their industry on the basis of their future plans. Generally, marketing students choose FMCGs (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) companies or Consumer Durables because of the higher customer interface and challenges. A finance student prefers banks or other financial institution because of the financial exposure which these companies provide. Similarly, a Systems or an Information Technology specialist will have his dream lying in working with companies like Infosys, Wipro, Polaris, etc.

A typical day starts at 6.00 in the morning by grabbing a pink business paper, analyzing the current business scenario. A quick breakfast at 8.30 in the morning, a strategy development session at 11.00 am, a canteen refresher meal at 3:00 in the afternoon while having a light talk with friends and professors, a presentation at 6.00 in the evening and a field survey at 8.00 in the night is just a glimpse of a peculiar day in a B-school. Not to mention that in between the available time, you would have analyzed Reliance Infocomm strategy, Bharti's deviation from its core competency, India's remarkable GDP growth, effect of the weakening dollar, etc.

Most prospective students know that the academic experience at a B-school is rigorous and challenging. It prepares graduates to succeed in managerial endeavor.

The pride of the Institute is over 4000 alumni, working in highly prestigious positions in Fortune 500 and top 100 Indian companies.

But that's only half the story...

B-school is a place that's stimulating, exciting, and fun. A place that has something interesting happening every day of the year. A place that encourages students to pursue their interests and explore their imagination.

From being an integral part of the Annual Paper Presentation in Business Conferences like Strategym, to writing a Business Plan for a start-up company, to helping a non-profit organization better achieve its mission, forms the part of day-to-day life in a B-school. The B-school experience is also about inspiring future managers to ask the probing questions and discover innovative answers as they develop the skills that they need to be leaders and architects of their own destiny.

Perseverance is the key to acquire that much wanted managerial skill set in a B-school. K. V. Kamath from ICICI, Manvinder Singh Vindi Banga from HLL or Ajay Piramal from Nicolas Piramal, all management graduates from top B-schools, certainly will agree with this underlying fact. One has to work hard and the outstanding faculty at a B-school plays a vital role in developing the managerial potential of students. In most of the reputed B-schools, the faculty belongs to the Business Mecca's of the world like Harvard, Stanford, Kellogg or Wharton or he may be FPM from IIMs. This faculty provides a rare mix of competence in both the theoretical aspects of management and the applied working knowledge of its practical aspects.

Apart from the full-time faculty, the visiting faculty which exposes students to actual business environment consists of various industry stalwarts. When they are not advancing business knowledge in diverse fields and working with business leaders around the world, they are unusually devoted to teaching you. Core competency from C. K. Prahlad, Advertising insights from Piyush Pandey or Alyque Padamsee will be a treat to the mental faculties of an aspiring manager. B-school also provides with an opportunity to interact with the alumni of the alma mater who have already proved their mettle in the corporate world in their respective arenas. They visit the institute and share their experiences with the budding managers.

Regular guest lectures at the B-school are a big attraction amongst the student communities. Students get an opportunity to interact with who's who of business world. Who else can tell you better about the success of Bharti than Sunil Mittal himself? How about a lecture from Narayan Murthy on Corporate Governance, or say, a brief interaction with Azim Premji on India's future outsourcing scenario.

A student generally studies between 40-45 courses in a B-school like Statistics, Financial Management, Strategy Development, Organisational Behaviour, Business Communication, Macro and Micro Economics, to name a few. He also gets corporate exposure through his summer projects, winter projects, etc., depending upon his area of interest / specialization.

One of the biggest benefits which a B-school offers is the contacts that one makes with one's classmates. Tomorrow everybody will be a manger in one or the other industry and when the whole of the batch meets during their alumni get-together once a year, the NOSTALGIA is overwhelming.

i have learnt many things from this articles which i found on the net while surfing and i am sure it will help all management aspirants and all of those who are undergong it can relate all this to what is going to come across in MBA.
take care

CASE STUDY ON ODEWALLA JUICE COMPANY

CASE STUDY

ON

ODWALLA JUICE COMPANY

FOR THE EVENT

MUMBAI FOOTPRINTS’O9

(SIMC)

INSTITUTE NAME:

CHETANA’S R.K. INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT AND RESEARCH

PARTICIPANT’S NAME

AJIT A. CHAVAN

BACKGROUND

Odwalla (pronounced "odewalla") is the health-conscious juice company which began a couple of decades ago when Greg Steltenpohl, Gerry Percy and Bonnie Bassett began squeezing fresh oranges on a $200 hand juicer.

ISSUES

On October 30, 1996, everything changed for the Odwalla Company. With the corporate vision in place and many precautionary tactics, Odwalla still could not avoid E. Coli. With a significant effect seen on the consumers FDA found a link between the Odwalla apple juice and the dangerous bacteria.

Sales fell by almost 90%, and the company’s stock price plummeted by 34%. More than 20 personal-injury lawsuits were filed and the future for the company did not look promising.

ACTIONS FORMULATED

As the company had gained a great name in the market and was one of the trusted brands in the market it is sure that the company would be receiving great media attention and would be talk oof the town. On this entire basis we have formulated our strategies.

As Odwalla was a big name in the juice making industry and a contamination case was certainly a major dent in reputation of the company. As a PR consultant certain strategies to be formulated to bring back the company from the losses and lost market name are mentioned below:

1. Print/visual media best suited for the products target audience, should be chosen to convey sincere apology.

2. As the company had gained a great name in the market and was one of the trusted brand in the market it is sure that the company would be receiving great media attention and would be a talk of the town. Hence it is of utmost importance for the company to maintain transparency about their function and also to admit the presence of contamination, as there always exists an element of human error.

3. Recall all the stocks available in the market so that the spread of E.Coli is prevented.

4. Compensation for all those affected by the viral outspread.

5. Clear and correct information to be provided to the media by the spokesperson of the company in order to prevent the spread of rumours.

6. All channels of communication from the consumer to the company should be kept open and tactfully convince the consumer and rebuild the trust.

7. Use the media coverage that company is getting, to communicate the message to consumer and rebuild their trust.

8. Set up hotlines and websites to answer all the queries of the consumer.

9. Continuous plant visits would be organized and that too by the representatives from FDA, and regular publishing of their reports in the news media, so the company will able to redevelop the trust in the market.

10. Company should adopt affordability Strategy

11. From recent experience of other companies restoration of consumer and hence trade confidence is of utmost importance

ECONOMIC BUDGETING AND ITS EFFECTS

As representative of the PR agency the plan devised has to be a one with maximum impact and minimum monetary inputs. Hence the plan chalked out can be economically suitable for Odwalla; the economic budget is as follows:

The company with the gross profit of around $1100Mn certainly has the capacity to bounce back in the market, by maintaining a low budget to overcome their declining market position.

So the plans formulated as a representative as a PR agency is economical as the core area of expenditure are only the:

1. Remuneration given to the families of those affected by contamination.

2. Advertisement cost for Public Apology.

3. Penalties paid to the FDA and other regulatory bodies.

All the other action plans given by us, require minimal expenditure as they are Intra Company resources put to judicial use.

SUMMARY
T
he consumer wants are now glorifying and increasing consumer awareness has led to a stiff competition amongst all major brands irrespective of the price, mainly focussing on the superior quality. These qualities and value for money which can be termed as benefits and utility of a particular product is offered by big brands. The so called big brands are not only big in terms of monetary value but also in terms quality and service offered.
TITAN is one of such brand that is one of the major market players in the Watch industry. Titan Industries Limited (TIL) is a dominant player in the Indian branded watch industry. The company has a presence in most segments of the watch market.
TIL, a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, commenced operations in 1987 under the name Titan Watches Limited (TWL). With the diversification of TWL into jewellery in 1994, the company changed its name to TIL.In June 2004, the company diversified into other lifestyle products like eyewear by extending its watch sub-brand Fastrack and perfumery with a new brand Evolve, launched in early 2005. The main manufacturing plants of the company were situated at Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
It also had an assembly unit at Dehradun in Uttaranchal and a unit that produced electronic circuitry for quartz watches in Goa. TIL reported a turnover of Rs.9.58 billion for the year ended 2003-04. Till 2004, TIL had sold more than 60 million watches. TIL's brands were sold from more than 5,000 multi-brand outlets and 175 exclusive 'World of Titan' outlets.

In 2004, TIL manufactured and marketed more than 7 million watches. It was India's leading producer of watches and the sixth largest global player in the category of manufacturer brands7. Its watches were sold in about 40 countries through its marketing subsidiaries based in London, Dubai, and Singapore. TIL also made watches for international labels.

The income of the TIL in the past three financial years is continuously increasing. The graphical representation of the income for the last three years can be shown as:

Over the past decade TITAN has built an image in the minds of consumer on basis of the quality and the various aspects rendered by the TITAN to the consumer.

The consumer mindset can been divided in the following ways(based on recent survey):

Why does a successful brand want to break out and add a new dimension? The key reason is that consumers evolve significantly. Their passions, obsessions and interests change. So if a great brand wants to remain as consumer-relevant in the future as it has been in the past, it has to reflect this evolution. For instance, concern for the environment features today in many consumers’ choices. Twenty years ago, the environment may not have featured on consumers’ radar screens at all.

For the past two decades, Titan has been a market leader in watches, a loved and trusted brand, perceived as a statement of elegance and style on your wrist. Yet, last year, when the brand wished to break out and add on the dimension of being youthful and sporty, it achieved this through a new sub-brand, Titan Octane. We introduced breakthrough wrist watches for Indian consumers – chronographs, tachymeters, multi-functions, retrograde movements and stunning sporty new designs – under a sub-brand which conveyed the high energy of sport.
Why a new sub-brand Octane?
Because it captured the spirit and energy of sport like the parent brand Titan never could. This breakout route was possible because Titan is a brand with wide appeal across consumer segments, hence can support multiple sub-brands well. Each new sub-brand adds a positive new dimension to the parent brand.
At the turn of the century, the ever evolving urban Indian male began to seek action and adventure in his life. He had also become fashion conscious and wanted to make a style statement and make his presence felt everywhere he went. With rising disposable income levels, young Indians started spending more, at the same time they sought more from the products they bought. They expected the products to understand their needs and suit their personality.
It was in this scenario that Titan decided to launch its Octane collection of watches in the mid-price segment in August 2007. Octane is a range of chronographs, multifunction and retrograde watches from Titan. The watches are all steel, with leather, metal and rubber strap options. The styling of the range is inspired by racing cars and designed to look like the dashboard of a racing car and embody a sense of masculinity, speed, energy and style.

TITAN COMPETITORS

The strategies that can be formulated to make TITAN OCTANE the most desirable and sought after watch in the consumer’s mind.
The customers can be classified mainly into 3 categories namely:
1. Existing
2. Potential
3. Substitute
The core areas can be exploited if a proactive methodology is implemented in this perfect competition market where in the profit percentage becomes a core area of concern.

The competition that TITAN faces is not only from the local brands and the international designer time wear but also from the low cost substandard quality Chinese make watches.

Narrowing down the competitors, we would like to show the competitors in the following way:

INTERNATIONAL
DOMESTIC
ESPIRIT
CITIZEN
SWATCH
HMT
GIORDANO
TIMEX
TAG HEUR
CIZER
TISSOT
INSIGNIA
OMEGA

LONGINESS

The breakup of the market share can be shown as:

PREVIOUS STRATEGY USED BY TITAN

TIL's communication strategy evolved over time. In 1987, the company was known only for the parent brand.
Through the 1990s, the company introduced several collections and sub-brands for different segments of the market. Though innovative and appealing, the marketing and communication efforts of these sub-brands were not integrated. Initially, they were advertised under the mother brand, but with the development of the market, it became necessary for TIL to develop separate communication and marketing campaigns for its sub-brands...
Though the decision had been made to use Aamir, the company was apprehensive that the actor might dominate the brand (Titan) or the message (multiple ownership). The marketing team at Titan wanted to keep the focus on the brand and the message. A TVC created by O&M was launched in October 2004.The commercial showed Aamir packing to leave for a tour and his assistant bringing him his collection of watches to ask which ones he should take out for the trip.
The TITAN has kept his brand name alive by continuously launching watches under a different sub brands.
As mentioned earlier by us, TITAN has always kept its publicity of the sub brands always different. Till date, none of sub brands under TITAN has had a common advertising and publicity campaign.
The varied offerings to diverse segments with a clear cut positioning strategy have been instrumental in sustaining the market share of the (Titan) brand.
(TIL) has to a great extent attempted to balance the positive aspects/associations of the mother brand with the option of using sub-brands to appeal to several segments.
Over the years, TIL launched several collections/ranges under the mother brand Titan.

TARGET AUDIENCES

The major characteristics of the target audience for TITAN OCTANE are:
1. Youth in the age group of 22-30
2. The main target population is from metros, mini metros, but we would also like to target youth from small cities.
3. The TITAN OCTANE brand has sporty look and a racy style look. So the target audiences would be all the people who are trendy towards sports irrespective of the age. the Aspires are value conscious, they are also likely to make impulse purchases.
4. The increase in the popularity of the FORMULA 1 sport and also an INDIAN team now involved in that sport has gained a major fan following. The TITAN OCTANE dial design is similar to the tachometers of a sports car look. So we can correlate the features and target the whole fan following group that too irrespective of age.
5. Our target audience can also be the corporate industry. In the corporate world there often happens corporate gifting happening intra companies and also inter companies in a process of public relations activity. So we can target this sector and build up a contract for the gifting.
6. Our indirect target audience are also the parents of all the youths (20-24yrs in age) who are dependent on their parents for buying accessories.

KEY CHALLENGES

The competition TITAN OCTANE is facing is not unified i.e. the challenges are not unified or from a particular factor but it is varied from all sphere all a perfect competition position. We have also maintained opportunities that are considered as challenge to implement. We have listed down all the possible challenges that TITAN OCTANE is facing in the market. They are:
1. The brand is facing a tough competition from the Chinese market. The Chinese market is following a phenomenon called ‘dumping’.

2. The Indian population scenario consists of a middle class and youths. TITAN OCTANE being on the costlier side pinches the pocket of a middle class youth.

3. The penetration of the TITAN OCTANE is only available in metros and big cities; the market penetration of TITAN OCTANE is not as great as other TITAN’S sub-brands.

4. Octane watches are completely portrayed as trendy and sporty watches rather than casuals watch. Majority of the target consumer are working in corporate world, and have lesser time for the trends. So the positioning and segmentation of the product is a key challenge.

5. Availability of mobiles, portable PC’s, laptops i.e. other substitutes of watches are always to the rescue of the target consumer.

6. Only 27% of the population wear watches. So great marketing coverage and selling is required for complete coverage of market.

7. In India, accessories are still perceived to be belts, shoes, ties etc. But watches are still not considered as a part of wardrobe.

8. Indian concept of “Foreign Goods” is yet to change wherein the quality of International brands is perceived to be better than Indian brands.

9. Internet accessibility not yet available to many of the target consumer. So it serves as a great challenge to meet the required target with the usage on internet.

10. The range of target audience that the company presently focuses on its radar is very small.

11. The major part of Indian population is less brand conscious.

12. The TITAN OCTANE is only been portrayed as ‘only male’ brand and it doesn’t have female variant models. This appears to be a challenge as females now have been entering in the main stream foray and also a big percentage of the youth population comprises of females.

13. One of the major challenges that seem to appear is that the watch industry has too much segmentation. So positioning of product is overlapping with many segments.

STRATEGIES
Communication and Advertising
The strategies that can be formulated to make TITAN OCTANE the most desirable and sought after watch in the consumer’s mind.
The customers can be classified mainly into 3 categories namely:
4. Existing
5. Potential
6. Substitute
The core areas can be exploited if a proactive methodology is implemented in this perfect competition market where in the profit percentage becomes a core area of concern.

Taking into consideration that TITAN has always projected their watches as being “affordable”, this weakness can be turned into strength.
1. As international brands are more expensive compared to what TITAN OCTANE has to offer. So a comparative study and publish manuals available to all possible target audience showing the comparison with the international brands in terms of the quality, services offered and also stating comparison price wise.
2. The malls culture is booming everywhere. We have noticed that TITAN do have “WORLD OF TITAN” i.e. as good as 175 outlets but very few of them are in malls. Now-a-days malls have become one stop place for shopping. So opening of showrooms in malls will serve a great way for TITAN overall.
3. The corporate relations should be looked upon seriously, so forming a department for TITAN OCTANE will specially serve the corporate relations. This can be more added on by giving a bulk shopping discount and also special TITAN OCTANE gift packaging which looks an impressive package as a whole.
4. In an Indian perspective, India is a country packed of festivals and occasions. For eg. There would be special discount during Diwali, Christmas and also wedding season. In short target and reach out more and more consumer during these occasions.
5. The penetration in the smaller cities can be increased by excessive publicity in the local market and acclimatizing the youth there to the youth in big metros. This strategy will help because the small town youth always try to idolise the youth living in big metros. So this can boost up sales of TITAN OCTANE would add up to the total sales of the product.
6. A new brand variant for females should also be launched. As females are also now entering in the mainstream array and the factor of metro sexuality is now becoming a fashion statement.
7. To make TITAN OCTANE a part of the brand accessories in the wardrobe, an advertising strategy would be develop in order to create a TITAN OCTANE as a style statement. The advertising strategy would consist of 3 different stages.(Advertising)
i. We would rope in brand ambassador for the TITAN OCTANE brand, for publicity at the national level. We opine that the brand ambassador for TITAN OCTANE should be(alternatives):
a. John Abraham. We choose John because he is associated with TITAN for the sub-brand FAST-TRACK. He, promoting the TITAN sub-brand again, would make people believes that the level of loyalty shown by John towards TITAN and promoting TITAN OCTANE and that there is something special in this brand. Also John has always portrayed a cult image and image that of a sportsperson and also avid biker who loves speed. The phenomenon ‘speed’ is always associated with him and this also overlap the TITAN OCTANE tag line.
b. Akshay Kumar. Akshay is always been portrayed as action oriented person and completely adventurous. He is a role model of many youngsters and he has the ability to connect with the youth. The brand TITAN OCTANE has overlapping features with the persona that off Akshay.
c. We also thought of roping in Karun Chandok (GP2 driver) and Alisha Abdullah (India’s first female superbike racer) {after launching female variant of TITAN OCTANE}. Both of them are emerging names in the racing circuit and are completely associated with image that TITAN OCTANE has to show.
ii. The publicity for small city youth can be done by promoting an ad campaign showing that the TITAN OCTANE is a style statement for the youths in the city and having a TITAN OCTANE in the wardrobe can change a complete feature of an individual.
iii. For publicity at international level, TITAN OCTANE should start sponsoring events like the FORMULA 1, A1 GP, Rally driving competition, the MOTO GP. This would help the publicity at international level.
iv. TITAN OCTANE should tie up with reality game shows and use that platform to advertise the range of Watches.
8. TITAN OCTANE should also start sponsoring the college festival and instead of putting up hoardings there, exhibits and various models of TITAN OCTANE should be displayed. So this will help the students present there personally have a look at the variants and get fascinated to the watch.
9. Also TITAN should host exhibition (only display) especially for all brands under TITAN. So all the watch lovers would definitely visit the exhibition and this will help us to collect the database of all the people who are crazy for watches, so we can personally contact those people.
10. Many youths now-a-days are constantly use the internet as medium of communication. So the medium of internet can be fully exploited to promote the brand of TITAN OCTANE.
i. Use of social networking sites like ORKUT, FACEBOOK to connect with the youth. This can be done by opening communities in which all the fans of TITAN OCTANE can share their views.
ii. Opening a special webpage for TITAN OCTANE, in which all the buyers can give the feedback of the brand and can be read by all the potential and substitute consumers.
iii. Sending group mail to the entire database available to inform about the features about the TITAN OCTANE.
11. Radio is the best medium to connect to the youth. TITAN OCTANE can capitalise on this opportunity by:
i. Coming up with creative jingles, and use the platform for complete publicity.
ii. Discount coupons can be distributed through various show contests to enhance sales.
12. The other attributes that can be associated with TITAN OCTANE are ‘watch for it’, ‘adventure personified’, ‘sport it’ and ‘speed is style’. We consider ‘fuel your watch’ because OCTANE (gas) chemically is a major component of car fuel.

CONCLUSION

As stated earlier, only 27% of the Indian population wear watches. So there is a great scope to penetrate in the market, where TITAN has always remained a leader. Also, the target audience that TITAN OCTANE is focussing on, forms a major portion of the watch buyers in India. So there is a tremendous opportunity for growth.

The strategies that we have formulated can help in converting the potential and substitute consumer into an existing one.

The challenges mentioned can be perceived as viable opportunities, and TITAN OCTANE can really capture the major segment it is eyeing.
